Tessellations - for flute and piano (2015)

Tessellations are essentially mosaics created by the repetition of various shapes. They can be created with the repetition of a single shape or with multiple shapes in order to create a uniform pattern that fills in all of the available space within the borders. In this piece, the shapes that make up these tessellations are pulses of varying speeds. When juxtaposed against each other, these pulses create unique polyrhythms that eventually align with one another through repetition. These points of alignment are like the borders that contain the tessellation. While each of the shapes that make up a tessellation can contain their own properties, when they are pieced together they create a uniform pattern. Similarly, the pulses in Tessellations are both broken down to be explored individually and put together like pieces of a puzzle to create intricate patterns.
