Wave Cycles A - for five percussionists (2024)
Duration: Approx. 12:15
Wave Cycles started as a series of experimental polyrhythmic miniature pieces that were designed to cater to the short form vertical video format that dominates the social media landscape of today. Each of the fifty two short pieces in the series, released weekly for a full year, explores the textures that occur when layering a single two measure musical figure played at multiple speeds upon itself resulting in a web of polyrhythmically related cycles that start together, gradually split apart, then realign.
In physics, the “wave cycle” of a sound wave is defined by the wavelength that occurs from peak to peak or trough to trough as the wave oscillates. In Wave Cycles, this concept is represented by the repetition of two bar figures in which one “cycle” represents a full repetition of the two bar phrases.
Wave Cycles A is the first of a series of performance adaptations of the original series which utilizes material from several of the miniature movements to create a multidimensional soundscape.
